Overview & Responsibilities
Rackspace is seeking a Linux Systems Engineer to join our team in our Blacksburg, VA office.
Work with your team to design, build, and maintain large-scale deployments of linux-based systems. You'll largely work with virtualized servers that serve web applications, databases, queuing systems, and mail systems. Deep knowledge and interest in linux server administration is required. You'll be working on a small team of software developers and other engineers on a mix of maintaining existing systems while building new ones.
Responsible for making architectural design decisions in our environment, solving technical problems and making educated improvements to the system, and is expected to identify and advise on potential pitfalls that we may experience and suggest alternatives that may better serve the stability and security of our hosted platform.
Supports and maintains network communication and solutions using the Linux Platform.
Responsible for solving complex technical issues which can include OS level, web server, database server, applications server, DNS, SMTP, or other software issues.
Technical responsibilities include problem identification, systems architecture design, hardware/software specification and/or design, and implementation.
- Applicants filling this position would be expected to keep abreast of current technologies and new versions of existing software solutions, be mindful of security implications at both an application and network level, understand how to manage disk I/O and memory usage, and how to evaluate and implement hot fixes or patches.
Responsible for the effective design and development of hardware, software, and networking solutions.
Analyzes systems and determines business requirements.
Ensures completeness and compatibility of the technical infrastructure to support system performance.
Keeps informed of new technology.
Good knowledge of MIS objectives and strategies.
General technical knowledge in technology methodologies, design, and implementation.
General analytical and design skills at multi-product/multi-environment level.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Able to resolve problems in a timely manner.
General knowledge of Linux Kernel, Configuration Management, Database Administration, Firewalls, Sys Design Mail, Advanced Scripting Language, Auth/ Directory services, Backups, Caching, HTML, CDN, SSL Certificates, Storage, Web Scripting, and Packet analysis required.
Basic knowledge of Shell Scripting, HTTP, FTP, High Availability, Hardware, Virtualization, Load Balancing, Networking, OS/DISTR, Patching, Performance Monitoring, RAID, Security, Web servers, Cluster management, SQL queries, DNS, and Systems Optimization required.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent experience.
Usually requires 2-3 years Linux systems experience, including systems administration and design/architecture experience.
